What are beets? Beets or beetroot are a root vegetable known for their bright red colour and many health benefits, including lowering blood pressure and providing many nutrients and essential minerals. They can be enjoyed raw, roasted, steamed, boiled and pickled!
Are your beets ready to harvest?
Beets are usually ready to harvest 50 to 60 days after direct sowing
Harvest when the tops of the beets are 1 inch in diameter
Harvest every other beet
The remaining beets will now grow faster, harvest them when they reach a diameter of 3 inches
Any bigger and beet will become woody
Harvest by carefully digging underplant and lift the plant out of the ground by leaves
Leaves of the beet can be saved during harvesting
Twist green tops of the beet off
Do not cut to close to the base of the beet or juices will leach out affecting the colour and taste of beet
